공연개요
Korea from 100 years ago, seen through the eyes of a British painter will be portrayed with the Korean traditional danceWhat would Korea from a century ago have looked like in the eyes of a British painter?Exotic scenery of Korea along with the Korean people living in dignity despite their difficult life under Japanese rule will become alive on stage through modernized Korean traditional dances with Elizabeth Keith’s paintings reconstructed by video technology shown on a big screen. From Elizabeth Keith to Kideok! The Korean signature for her paintings ‘Kideok(奇德)’ she changed her name to was nothing but the genuine love and compassion she had for Korea. This show offers a rare opportunity to experience how our ancestors’ daily life in modern era, portrayed in vivid colors on Keith’s paintings, becomes more emotionally charged through dance. ScenesPrologueChapter 1 Everyday life in Joseon seen through the blue eyesChapter 2 Wedding without a groomChapter 3 A March of prisoners on death rowChapter 4 The shaman and the dance of sprits Chapter 5 Road to Mt. GeumgangsanChapter 6 Keith becomes KideokChapter 7 Lotus lantern festivalEpilogueElizabeth Keith, 1887-1956There are few genre paintings left about Korean people’s daily life of the past. However, Elizabeth Keith had painted so many of them in water color or in wood print since 1919 when Korea was still under Japanese rule. She traveled to Joseon several times and became the first Western artist who held an exhibition in Seoul in 1921. Keith had also participated in designing Christmas seals in Korea three times since 1934, from which she changed her signature to ‘Kideok(奇德)’. She is assumed to have left more than 80 paintings about Korea that are now owned by several museums both in Korea and overseas.
