Cinq Incantations for Solo FluteFlutist Han Ji-eunCharacterized by a wide musical spectrum with rich musicality and refined
technique, flutist Han Ji-eun distinguished herself early on by winning the
first prize at the Ewha-Kyunghyang Competition and the Chosun-Ilbo Competition
in Korea. While she was studying at Seoul Arts High School following at Yewon
School, she went over to France at the age of 16 to study at Conservatoire
national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon with the jury’s unanimous
acceptance. After she graduated there with the highest score (Très Bien à
l’unanimité), she earned her Artist Diploma at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in
the US and her doctoral degree at Seoul National University back in Korea with
the thesis of “An aesthetic and interpretive analysis of ‘Cinq Incantations for
Solo Flute’ based on André Jolivet’s Primitivism.”While studying at Oberlin, Han earned the first prize in wind at the music
competition held in Ohio and performed with the Oberlin Contemporary Music
Ensemble at Merkin Hall in New York. And her performance as principal flutist
of Oberlin Chamber Orchestra led by Sir Simon Rattle received a critical
acclaim, quoted as “Under
Sir Rattle, the Oberlin musicians played with superb cohesiveness and
refinement... There were notable contributions from flutist Jieun Han” from the
influential Cleveland press “The Plain Dealer.”On her return to Korea, she became assistant principal flutist of Daejeon
Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 23 and served there for 6 years. She also
served as principal flutist of the SAC Festival Orchestra. Named one of the Top
10 Korean Flutists by the “Flute & Flutist” magazine in 2006 and 2007, Han
performed with Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, Prime Philharmonic Orchestra,
Beha Philharmonic Orchestra, and Muse Wind Orchestra for concerto performances.
She participated in the concert in South America organized by the Korea
Foundation as part of Aulos Woodwind Quintet and in Yuhki Kuramoto’s chamber
music recording released in 2015.Han launched a flute recital series with theme and commentaries called “Flautato
Series” in 2016 in order to get classical music more accessible to a broader
audience, and led a lecture recital series of music history and humanity called
“Han Ji-eun’s Music Salon ‘from Bach to BTS’” at Anseong Art Hall’s Culture and
Arts Academy in 2019. Also, as part of Studio Gongjak, the content provider of classical
music, she has been taking part in the YouTube channel “Monday Classic” as host
and performer in the hopes of contributing to the promotion of classical music.Not only performing extensively at various places for active
communications with the audience, Han also serves as a board member of the
Flute Association of Asia and the Korea Flute Association, and as music
director of flute ensemble ‘Ipeul.’ She is on the artist roster of Dolce Powell
and teaches at Korea National University of Arts as an adjunct professor as
well as at Sookmyung Women’s University, Chugye Arts University, Yewon School,
and Seoul Arts High School as an instructor.
